Indefinite curfew was imposed in areas around Airport in Jammu after one person died and over a dozen others including cops got injured in violent clashes between police and a mob of unruly Sikh youth at Gaddigarh near Jammu on Thursday.
Trouble erupted after police resorted firing to quell violence by Sikh youth who were protesting over the removal of a hoarding displaying the photograph of Jarnail Singh Bhjindrawale by local cops on Wednesday. The firing came after police repeated lathicharge and teargassing failed to disperse stone pelting mob in which many were brandishing sharp edged weapons.
Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Simrandeep Singh, said that curfew has been imposed in areas from Satwari to Miran Sahib.
Bhindrawale, who spearheaded anti-India militancy in Punjab during 1980s, was killed in Op Blue Star by the troops. A hoarding informing people about the holding of Gurmat Samagam (religious congregation) at Simbal Camp on June 6 was removed from near the Jammu airport by local police on Wednesday as it carried the photograph of Bhindrawale.
Angry over the police action, Sikh youth assembled on the road and started holding demonstration demanding suspension of Station House Officer of Satwari police station, Kulvir Singh. They claimed that there was nothing objectionable written on the hoarding and it carried the photograph of Bhindrawale every year.
A police sub inspector was allegedly stabbed by some miscreants and vehicular traffic on the busy road from Jammu Airport to border R S Pura town remained disrupted throughout the day following demonstrations by local Sikh youth. While the injured police sub inspector was hospitalized, the demonstrators lifted their blockade late in the evening following persuation by senior civil and police officers.
However, the trouble erupted again on Thursday morning when a group of Sikh youth reassembled near the airport and started demanding re-erection of the same hoarding despite opposition from local police. As situation escalated with crowd swelling, more reinforcements of police were rushed to the spot.
By afternoon, as passion ran high, some people in the crowd started pelting stones at the police making the later to resort to lathicharge and even lob teargas shells. As the stone pelters continued to regroup, it also fired some shots in the air to disperse them.
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses said that some cops also ran amuck and entered the nearby houses on the roadside, breaking the window panes and even wind screens of vehicles parked there.
