NEW DELHI: Hyundai is set to fire competition in the mini SUV segment with the launch of a sub-Rs 10 lakh SUV Creta. The SUV will be pitted against vehicles such as Renault Duster and Ford Eco Sport. Creta has been developed on the ix25 SUV platform, which is sold in China. This will be the first low-cost SUV from the Korean manufacturer for Indian market. A highly aggressive pricing is expected to make Creta a formidable model in the category, Rakesh Srivastava, senior VP (sales & marketing) at Hyundai India, said. The SUV will be launched in July and Hyundai plans to carry a high degree of localization to keep the costs under control. The mini SUV segment has been a fast-seller in the market as more and more Indians ride the growing road network to commute between cities. Refinement in vehicle quality and relatively-younger buyers are also prompting people to buy mini SUVs. Creta will come in petrol and diesel versions and will have engine options of 1,400cc and 1,600 cc. Hyundai will also launch an automatic variant. Hyundai is not the only company to look at the mini SUV segment. Domestic heavyweights such as Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors are also lining up compact SUVs and so are Maruti Suzuki, General Motors and Nissan. Srivastava said Creta will be manufactured at the companys Chennai factory and sources said Hyundai also plans to export the vehicle.
