NEW DELHI: A day after the wife and children of an excise officer were found murdered at home in Uttam Nagar in west Delhi, police have ruled out robbery to be a motive behind the killings but say that someone who bore feelings of extreme hatred towards the family had done them and that this person was aware of its daily routine.
Deepmala (34) was found lying on the bed with a dupatta wrapped around her throat while her children, Saksham (9) and Vaishnavi (2), lay with their throats slit on the bathroom floor. Police have picked up a laptop and the woman's mobile phones that were lying beside her for investigations. The role of the husband, Amit Kumar, is ruled out for now as his mobile shows his location was away during the time of crime.
Locals said Amit had moved to the second floor two-room apartment at J-14 a year ago. He had taken it on a rent from a property dealer at B-block of Mohan Nagar after he was posted at the excise office in ITO. He had earlier been inspector at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Amit's brother is a chartered accountant and lives in Noida.
Neighbour Deepak Arora, who lives in the third floor flat, says Amit arrived around 7pm looking for his wife. "His daughter often came to play with my children. Amit looked worried as Deepmala was not reachable over phone," said Arora. Amit said they were supposed to go to a wedding party and he had asked Deepmala to be ready with the kids to leave.
When Arora went downstairs, the wooden door behind the grill gate was partially open but the gate, itself, was padlocked. He peeped inside and saw a part of Deepmala's body. It seemed she was prone on the ground. He told Amit and together they broke open the door. "Amit went inside and shrieked. The door of the bathroom was open and I saw the children lying on top of each other in a pool of blood," said Arora. He then called police.
Police say the incident is likely to have taken place between 5.30pm and 6pm. Preliminary investigations suggest that there was a scuffle between the woman and the killer. A part of her salwar was torn. Once she was dead, the killer took the children to the bathroom and slit their throats. The weapon of murder has not been found. Investigators say that the assailant had probably taken the padlock and keys from the house and used them to lock it from outside.
Neighbours claim they did not hear any sounds coming from the apartment. The area do not have a CCTV camera. The three bodies were handed over to the family members on Tuesday. They were taken to hometown Saharanpur for cremation.
